Entry Requirements

Master Programmes
by Research and Mixed Mode

(a) A Bachelor’s Degree in the field or related fields with CGPA of 2.75 and above or equivalent as approved by the Senate; or 

(b) A Bachelor’s Degree in the field or related fields or equivalent with CGPA of 2.50 and above but less than CGPA of 2.75, subject to rigorous internal assessment; or

(c) A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields or equivalent with minimum CGPA of 2.00 but less than CGPA of 2.50, and show evidence of at least five (5) years of relevant working or research experience can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; or

(d) Candidates without a Bachelor’s degree in the related fields or relevant working experience must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by UTAR and meet the minimum CGPA set out in (a) to (c).

Master Programmes by Coursework

(a) A Bachelor’s Degree in the field or related fields with CGPA of 2.75 and above or equivalent as approved by the Senate; or

(b) A Bachelor’s Degree in the field or related fields with CGPA of 2.00 and above but less than CGPA of 2.75, or equivalent as approved by the Senate subject to rigorous internal assessment; or

(c) Candidates without a Bachelor’s degree in the related fields or relevant working experience must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by UTAR and meet the minimum CGPA set out in (a) & (b).

Master of Architecture
(1) A Bachelor's Degree with Honours and CGPA of 2.75 and above or a Bachelor's Degree with CGPA of 2.75 and above in a related field from UTAR; or


(2) A Bachelor's Degree with Honours and CGPA of 2.00 and above but less than 2.75 or a Bachelor's Degree with CGPA of 2.00 and above but less than 2.75 in the relevant field of study from UTAR and subjected to rigorous assessment; or

(3) Any other qualifications equivalent to (i) and (ii) as recognized by the Senate and Board of Architects Malaysia; and

(4) at least six months of post degree Practical Experience in a registered architect's office evidenced in a log book; and

(5) a portfolio for submission and assessment

Master of Psychology (Industrial & Organisational Psychology)  
(1) A Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or its equivalent with minimum CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00; or
Note: A Bachelor's Degree in Psychology not meeting CGPA of 2.75 (but not lower than 2.5) can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment by an independent review panel; or


(2) A Bachelor's Degree with minimum CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00 in any field, and a minimum 45 credits of prerequisites modules in Psychology or its equivalent (covering all eight Knowledge Areas highlighted in pages 13 - 14 of Programme Standards: Psychology) with a minimum CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00 in the prerequisites modules; or

(3) A Bachelor's Degree with minimum CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00 in any field, and a minimum 30 credits of prerequisites modules in Psychology or its equivalent (covering all eight Knowledge Areas highlighted in pages 13 -14 of Programme Standards: Psychology) with a minimum CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00 in the prerequisites modules, and a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test (Psychology) with a minimum score of 550; or

(4) Other relevant or equivalent qualification.

Master of Science (Computer Science)
(1) a Bachelor's Degree of Computing or in the area of science and technology or related to computing, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; or


(2) a Bachelor's Degree of Computing or in the area of science and technology or related to computing, with CGPA below 3.00 but above 2.50, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; or

(3) a Bachelor's Degree of Computing or in the area of science and technology or related to computing, with CGPA less than 2.50, with a minimum of 5 years working experience in a relevant field and subjected to rigorous assessment; or


(4) any other academic qualifications equivalent to (1), (2) or (3) from another recognised University, as approved by the Senate.

    
Doctoral Degree by Research



and 



Industrial Doctoral Degrees
(a) A Master’s degree in the field or related fields from UTAR; or 

(b) A Master's Degree  in the field or related fields of another  university or equivalent qualification from an institution as approved by Senate; or

(c) Candidates without a related Master’s degree in the field or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by UTAR; or

(d) A Bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields from UTAR with First Class Honours or with a minimum CGPA of 3.67 and show evidence of related research aptitude to the satisfaction of the Senate; or

(e) A Bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields of another university or equivalent qualification from an institution with First Class Honours or with a minimum CGPA of 3.67 as approved by the Senate and shows evidence of related research aptitude to the satisfaction of the Senate; or

(f) Any other qualifications equivalent to (a), (b), (d) or (e) as approved by the Senate.
Doctoral Degree by Retrospective or Prior Publication
(a) A Master’s degree in the field or related fields from UTAR; or 

(b) A Master's Degree  in the field or related fields of another  university or equivalent qualification from an institution as approved by Senate; or

(c) Candidates without a related Master’s degree in the field or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by UTAR; or

(d) A Bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields from UTAR with First Class Honours or with a minimum CGPA of 3.67 and show evidence of related research aptitude to the satisfaction of the Senate; or

(e) A Bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields of another university or equivalent qualification from an institution with First Class Honours or with a minimum CGPA of 3.67 as approved by the Senate and shows evidence of related research aptitude to the satisfaction of the Senate; or

(f) Any other qualifications equivalent to (a), (b), (d) or (e) as approved by the Senate.


Application should include the following additional supporting documents:-

(i)minimum of five (5) articles published in renowned journals in which the candidate shall be the main and/or corresponding author. The articles shall not previously been used for the award of any degree obtained by the candidate;

(ii) an executive summary of approximately 3,000 words on the above publications to show coherence between the five (5) articles and demonstrate his contribution to knowledge in the specialised field

(iii) a list of other scholarly published works.

An International applicant who does not fulfil the English Language requirement will be considered for Conditional Offers, whereby the applicant will undergo a Preparatory Course. Applicant should then register and sits for either one of the Recognized examinations and achieve the score as per programme standard/ UTAR English requirement within 2 years from the date of entry into Malaysia. 

If the applicant has obtained the Bachelor's or Master's degree with English as the sole medium of instruction, a letter from the institution's Registrar as supporting document is required. Senate may, upon the recommendation of the Faculty, exempt a candidate from the English Language requirement if the candidate had obtained the Bachelor's or Master's degree using English as the sole medium of instruction or as one of the mediums of instruction.


Chinese Language (Only applicable for Chinese Studies programmes)

In addition to the academic requirements and English requirement*, an applicant is also required to possess any one of the following:

(a) a credit in SPM Chinese Language;
(b) a credit in O level Chinese Language;
(c) a credit in UEC Chinese Language Examination; 
(e) a pass in STPM Chinese Language; 
(f) Level 5 (minimum 210 marks, maximum 300 out of 300 marks) in China's New Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (New HSK)/ New Chinese Proficiency Test (from 2010 onwards);
(g) Level 5 in Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) (from 2013 onwards);

If the applicant has obtained the Bachelor's or Master's degree with Chinese as the sole medium of instruction, please provide the letter from the institution's Registrar as supporting document 

*English language requirement only applicable for International applicant
